UPDATE: The 1940 Flood Retrospective and the Central Flood Protection Plan Meeting Has been CANCELED.
Please check back soon to see if and when it may be rescheduled.
Place: Community Meeting Room, Colusa Indian Community Council’s Event Facility 3770 CA-45, Colusa
What: Community members are invited to attend a presentation on the 1940 flood that inundated much of the Sacramento Valley. The extent of that flood event was even greater than the 1986 and 1997 floods, which caused hundreds of millions in damages and cost dozens their lives. Despite that fact, the 1940 flood has been largely forgotten. The presentation will focus on the historical aspects of that flood event and precede a follow-on presentation on the 2017 Update to the Central Valley Flood Protection Plan. Representatives from the Department of Water Resources and the Central Valley Flood Protection Board will present an overview of the Plan and the schedule for its adoption.
Why: The meeting is being sponsored by the Mid and Upper Sacramento River Regional Flood Management Planning group. Representatives from a number of organizations within the Mid and Upper Sacramento River basin (covering portions of Butte, Glenn, Tehama, Yolo, Colusa, Lake and Sutter Counties) have developed a flood management plan that outlines the region’s long-term vision for flood risk reduction. The plan includes the current state of flood risk conditions, flood protection problems and opportunities, potential projects and priorities, and needs for local, state and federal financing. Projects identified in the plan may be eligible for future state funding..
