The Knights Landing Ridge Drainage District was formed in 1913 by the legislature. The District encompasses 71,000 acres south of RD 108 and maintains the levees on either side of Knights Landing Ridge Cut. The Knights Landing Ridge lies to the west of the town of Knights Landing and was created by sediment washed down from the western foothills. It was presumed at one time that Cache Creek discharged directly into the Sacramento River, but since has always discharged further south in the Yolo Basin and left a former creek bed along the south of Colusa Basin preventing water from escaping. Immediately following the creation of the Drainage District, construction began to cut a channel through the ridge to allow winter water flows to pass. The Knights Landing Ridge Drainage District provides flood protection for the town of Knights Landing and drainage for run-off coming from the north. It maintains the levees on either side of the Knights Landing Ridge Cut.
