The Sacramento Valley is home to many species of wildlife that find habitat in the farm fields, along the irrigation canals and the Sacramento River.
Rice is the primary crop in RD 108 as it comprises over two-thirds of the District's 48,000 acres. It is also the only crop that replicates wetlands. More than half of the Sacramento Valley's wetlands are in private ownership. The many rice fields in the Sacramento Valley serve as critical habitat to approximately 7 million ducks and geese and hundreds of thousands of shorebirds. The Sacramento Valley represents the single most important wintering area for the waterfowl that rely on this region to rest and feed for annual migration.
